Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Female Otokodate, 1865

Comments - Interesting kabuki featuring four beauties as otokodate or street knights. The three women at left are armed with swords, and each holds a towel or has one around her shoulders. The two women at left seem engrossed in conversations, while the beauty in the center grins happily back at her companion. Her dark blue kimono features a design of white pine branches with raindrops coming from swirling gray and brown thunderclouds. A colorful border of crests runs across the top of the triptych. From left, the actors are Bando Mitsugoro as Oden, Sawamura Tossho II as Okichi, Ichimura Kakitsu IV as Okuma, and Onoe Kikujiro II as Oroku. Nice large figures with fine line work in the hair and bokashi shading in the background.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 28 3/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. A few small holes repaired. Slight soiling. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
