Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Meiji Emperor and Empress in a Dragon Boat, 1897

Comments - Terrific illustration of the Meiji Emperor and Empress riding in a fantastic boat with a fierce dragon prow. The emperor wears a military uniform with fringed epaulets and a sash, and a hat with white fur trim. Two dignitaries stand at his side, also in uniform, while ladies-in-waiting surround the empress. A smaller boat with two women in it pulls up at left, while other vessels can be seen in the water at right. Cherry trees covered with bright pink blossoms line the bank. A great image, vibrantly colored and wonderfully detailed, with embossing in the white kimono collars and fur trim.
