Series; Elegant Portraits of Actors, 1862

Bando Hikosaburo V - Terrific early Yoshitoshi kabuki portrait of Bando Hikosaburo V. The actor is shown in a round frame made of twigs or reeds, looking suspiciously over his shoulder with a frown, with the crest of the Bando Hikosaburo line of actors behind him. He wears a blue and white summer cotton kimono, a towel draped over his shoulder. A poem slip fluttering in the breeze below features a poem by him in his own calligraphy, with a tangle of delicate clover filling the background, which is shaded from deep blue to pale green. A handsome design, detailed with cloth embossing in the poem slip. A rare find, as we've never come across this series before.
