Battle of Uji Bridge, circa 1847 - 1848

Comments - Fantastic triptych of the Battle of Uji Bridge between the Genji and Heike forces in 1180. Aided by warrior monks, Genji warriors battle the approaching Heike samurai atop the arched wooden bridge. Horses and men go plunging over the side of the bridge as two warrior monks fight with a sword in each hand. At upper left, a samurai runs headlong into a hail of arrows, gripping his naginata with both hands. At bottom center, a row of archers fires across the river, their backs against the tent walls of the Genji encampment, where Minamoto no Yorimasa sits calmly on a folding stool with his bow in hand. An incredible scene full of energy and action, wonderfully detailed. A terrific subject for a samurai enthusiast.
