Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Rebel Samurai Retreating, 1877

Comments - Fantastic illustration from the Satsuma Rebellion of rebel samurai retreating with the Japanese Imperial Army in pursuit. The warriors gather along the rocky shore, with the fellow in the center shouting orders and gesturing towards the men straggling up the hill at left, with Japanese flags fluttering in the distance. He grips a bloody spear, and is bleeding from wounds to his shoulder and side. At left, a samurai limps forward using his sword as a crutch, his foot wounded. At right, a warrior standing in a waiting boat shields his hand with his eyes as he scans the landscape beneath the dark night sky. A great dramatic image, with expressive figures and vibrant color.
