Sumo: Momotaro Wrestles Kintaro, circa 1847

Comments - Terrific image of the young boys Momotaro and Kintaro sumo wrestling under the watchful eyes of two animal referees. At right, Momotaro or Little Peachling leans forward, gripping the arm of his opponent. He wears a tunic patterned with peaches. At left, Kintaro, who was known for his strength, pushes Momotaro's by the shoulder, dressed in a boldly checked tunic. At left, a black bear in a red tie-dyed robe holds a folding fan. At right, a bird-headed referee darts about waving his fan. A fantastic subject with a great composition.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 1/2" x 27 7/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. Small loss at left edge of center panel, wormholes, repaired. Slight soiling and creasing, light ink offsetting, slight rubbing at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
