Prince Genji and Salt Making on the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa, 1853

Comments - Fantastic triptych from a collaborative Genji series by Hiroshige and Toyokuni III depicting an updated Prince Genji in fashionable modern dress, rather than the clothing of the Heian era when the novel was written. Here, the young nobleman stands on a hill overlooking the shore on the Noto Peninsula, smiling and fanning himself as he enjoys the scenery. A woman kneels before him, holding a round basket piled with fish. She gestures towards the beach, where a worker with a large rake walks past the small huts used for making salt. Pine trees frame a beautiful view of the sea, with sails visible in the distance and a rosy glow spreading along the horizon as the sun sets. Beautifully colored and detailed, with fine bokashi shading in the water and sky. A terrific design from this rarely seen collaboration.
