Spring Night Scene from Inaka Genji, 1847 - 1852 - Handsome image of Mitsuuji, the Inaka or Country Genji, watching as a young beauty arrives at his mansion. He sits on a deck at right, leaning against the edge of an open window, looking out of the corners of his eyes. At left, a matron leads the guest across the stepping stones of the garden, holding her by the hand. She carries a lantern shielded by a cloth in her other hand. The beauty smiles shyly, tilting her head to the side, dressed in a brocade kimono patterned with wisteria over a red under robe. Two women wait outside the garden gate at left, one giggling into her sleeve as she looks up at her companion. Cherry blossoms frame the scene overhead, and a dipper rests across a stone water basin at right. A charming design with an attractively detailed setting and beautiful color. Includes delicate embossing in the white kimono trim.
