Shirabyoshi Dancer and Temple Bell, 1852

Comments - Attractive kabuki scene from the popular play commonly known as "Musume Dojoji." A shirabyoshi dancer arrives at Dojoji Temple, asking to perform at the dedication of a new temple bell. Previously, the beauty Kiyohime was in love with a priest there, who hid beneath the temple bell to avoid her attention. Kiyohime transformed into a serpent, curling around the bell and melting it, killing the priest inside. No woman has been allowed there since. The priests reluctantly agree to let the dancer perform, but they are soon overcome by strange feelings, unaware that the woman is actually the spirit of Kiyohime. She wears a floral kimono and tall man's court cap as she waves a fan, smiling as she looks up at the bell. The priest at left leans forward eagerly with a surprised expression, mesmerized by the dance. The priest at right scowls at her, sensing that something about her is not quite right. Cherry blossoms frame the scene overhead against a softly shaded sky, and a large temple bell hangs at right. A terrific scene, attractively detailed and colored, fine bokashi shading in the background.
