Series; Comparisons for Thirty-six Selected Poems, 1852
Comparisons for Thirty-six Selected Poems - Handsome design from a Toyokuni III series pairing kabuki actors with verses by Japan's famous "Thirty-six Immortal Poets." Each print features a large half-length portrait with a landscape across the background, with the poem in square inset next to the title cartouche. The figures are expressive and beautifully detailed, and many feature deluxe embellishments such as embossing, burnishing, and bokashi shading. A few even have a slight sheen applied to the eyes to give them a moist, lifelike appearance. These bold woodblocks are a great example of Toyokuni's mastery of kabuki portraits.
