The Shoots of the Princess Pine, the Shimmer of Hot Air over the Moor, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Lovely triptych showing Mitsuuji, the "Country Genji," and the young Princess Komatsu entering the courtyard of a palace. The nobleman hides his face behind a folding fan as he whispers to his companion at left. Komatsu, which means "small pine tree," smiles as her attendant points the way with a fan, another servant behind her carrying a parcel wrapped in small cloth. She wears a beautiful red kimono patterned with cranes in flight and flowing streams. Two lanterns with Genji symbols on the sides flank the entrance, and small pine trees line the background against the darkening evening sky. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. A lovely design, finely detailed with delicate embossing in the white kimono trim and burnishing in the black garden wall at right.
