Five Chivalrous Men under a Plum Tree, 1855

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene of five otokodate or street knights under a flowering plum tree. They wear matching tie-dyed kimono tied with black and red checked obi. Each carries a shakuhachi flute, which could be used as a weapon, along with a single sword. Dotted with white blossoms and buds, the ancient plum tree is set against the dark night sky, providing a dramatic backdrop for the group. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Kaminari Shokuro, Bando Takesaburo I as Gokuin Sen'emon, Nakamura Fukusuke I as Hotei Ichiemon, Iwai Kumesaburo III as Karigane Bunshichi, and Kataoka Gado II as A no Heike. A handsome design with fine shading in the background.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 28 1/2" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Stitching holes at one side of each panel, a few small holes and thinning spots, repaired. Slight soiling and creasing, rubbing near edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
