Cherry Trees in Bloom at Arashiyama

Comments - Beautiful spring triptych of Prince Genji and two beauties enjoying an outing to view the cherry trees at Arashiyama in Kyoto. Elegant rugs are spread under the trees at right, with a picnic laid out, including a bento box and portable brazier warming a bottle of sake. The seated beauty holds up a telescope as she smiles at the happy young prince. Genji wears a lovely coat patterned with cherry blossoms and daffodils over a blue kimono, an ornately carved pipe in his hand. A woman approaches at left carrying a mokkin, a Japanese xylophone, the instrument beautifully decorated with flowers. The hillside perch offers a lovely vista of the lake and mountains beyond, the trees covered with clouds of delicate pink blossoms. A terrific image from the classic "Tale of Genji," with beautiful detail in the elegant kimono fabrics and soft shading in the water and sky. A fantastic choice for display.
