The Fifty-three Stations: Haunting at Okazaki Station, 1847

Comments - Terrific supernatural scene of a haunting at Okazaki Station on the Tokaido Road in the kabuki play "Onoe Kikugoro Ichidai Banashi." In the center, Inabanosuke becomes alarmed as he sees the face of a horrible demon staring back at him from the mirror in his hand, a worried expression on his face. A wisp of smoke arises from his chest, with the spirit of a beauty emerging from the cloud in the center. She watches him with a horrified expression, holding her sleeve to her chest. At right, the young woman Kashiwagi smiles as she looks up, a heavy robe with a black fur collar draped over her shoulders. She kneels behind a low folding screen decorated with a full moon and grasses. From left, the actors are Ichimura Uzaemon XII as Inabanosuke, Onoe Kikugoro III as Usugumo, and Fujikawa Kayu III as Kashiwagi. An intriguing ghost design with expressive figures.
