Scarred Beauty and Tattooed Man, 1864

Comments - Handsome kabuki triptych from the story of Yosaburo and Otomi. The dishonored son of a merchant, Yosaburo was captured during a tryst with a gang boss's mistress, Otomi, and both were slashed all over. Separated from his sweetheart, Yosaburo was reduced to petty crime, becoming the associate of Yasu the Bat, so-named for the bat-shaped tattoo on his face. Here, Yasu the Bat has come to the home of Otomi to blackmail her. The scarred beauty sits in the center, smiling fondly over her shoulder at the man smoking a pipe at right. The angry Yasu folds his arms firmly across his chest, tucking his hands into his sleeves as he scowls. A nice design featuring three large half-length figures surrounded by text.
