Women Warriors at Kagoshima, 1877

Comments - Lively image of a woman warrior attacking government troops at Kagoshima during the Satsuma Rebellion. Her kimono sleeves tied back with a narrow sash, she grips a naginata behind her back with both hands as she dodges a sword thrust, hopping on one foot. Two rebel generals on horseback ride among the samurai behind her, a white banner fluttering in the night sky. An interesting image of one of the wives and daughters of samurai who joined the rebellion against the Meiji government. Includes burnishing in the black uniforms.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 9 1/2" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three small holes, repaired. Creasing, slight soiling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
