Comments - Fantastic triptych depicting the attempted arrest of the famous warrior Sato no Tadanobu, a loyal retainer of Yoshitsune. After a former mistress betrayed his hiding place, he used a go board to fight off more than 200 policemen attacking him. Here, he waves the go board above his head with one hand, while simultaneously crushing a guard's head beneath his foot and grabbing his mistress's robe as she tries to flee. Chaos reigns as another samurai tumbles to the ground at left, knocking over a pail of water, and the container of game pieces scatters its contents through the air. A plum tree blooms in the garden, with misty clouds drifting before a glowing moon. An incredible scene from this legendary tale, with a beautifully detailed setting, including touches of burnishing and embossing, and fine bokashi shading in the background. A nice crisp, clean print.
