A Competition among Powerful Magicians, 1869

Comments - Incredible triptych depicting a competition among powerful magicians. At bottom center, a young man leads against a tiger as he casts a spell by making a gesture with his hands. Just above him at left, a magician stands atop a writhing dragon, holding up a mirror. The fellow to the right of him rides on a bat, shining his lantern at his enemies. At upper left, leering demons cavort about a beauty in a white kimono. At right, a man sits atop an enormous toad, scowling angrily with his armed folded across his chest. The magician beside him a right grips a sword upright as the wind swirls his robe and red flames dance about the night sky. At bottom right, a badger reads a book. A fantastic image with wonderfully expressive figures and terrific detail. Includes burnished patterns in the two black kimono and additional embossing in the white kimono trim of the nun at far right.
