Series; Renowned Beauties Likened to the Six Immortal Poets

Publisher - Adachi from a rare series of Edo masterwork designs. Adachi publisher seal in margin or on reverse.

Adachi was one of the most respected publishers of the 20th century. Their woodblocks were printed to the highest standards with excellent color and fine detail. Founded in 1925, Adachi also chose interesting and varied subjects for their prints and was the only publisher of many famous old ukiyo-e images.

The Asahiya Widow - Wonderful Utamaro portrait of a young beauty drying the side of her face with a towel after a bath. Her shaved eyebrows and hairstyle indicate that she is a widow. She wears a gray cotton kimono with a tie-dyed seashell pattern, tied with a green obi. The inset at top left features a go board as part of a picture riddle spelling out the beauty's name. A classic image from the golden age of Japanese woodblocks, with fine detail in the hairline.

Artist - Utamaro (1750 - 1806)

Image Size - 15 1/8" x 10 1/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Slight thinning and paper remnants on reverse at corners from previous mounting. Faint toning, slight creasing at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
