Attacking a Man, 1849

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the play "Tsuki no demura tsuyu no tamaya" of a commoner attacking a man in a striped kimono. At left, the victim has fallen back on one hand and knee as the rogue grabs him by the collar with one hand, raising the other in the air. He looks back at the others gathered in the room, the samurai in the center frowning at him severely as he holds and elegant lacquer platter with a carp and waves on it. Beside, him a matron grimaces unhappily at the attacker, holding a few tissues to her cheek. At right, another samurai reaches for his sword while a beauty smiles up at him slyly, watching him out of the corners of her eyes. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Tamaya Shinbei, Kodanji IV as Ukai Kujuro, unidentified actor, Bando Hikosaburo IV as Demura Shinbei, Nakamura Shijuro, and Onoe Kikujiro II as Kojoro. Great expressive figures.
