The House of the Golden Vase (Kinpeiro), 1870

Comments - Terrific image of shirabyoshi dancers performing at the House of the Golden Vase (Kinpeiro) teahouse, accompanied by musicians and chanters. The two women wave their fans and raise their sleeves gracefully, turning to smile at each other. Dressed in layers of beautiful kimono, they wear tall men's court caps tied under the chin with a purple cord. Their fans are decorated with cranes, pine trees, and a turtle, all symbols of good luck and longevity. A small boy holds a hand drum at left, with a row of women chanting and playing shamisen behind him. A fantastic composition, with large colorful figures, fine embossed detail on the white kimono collars and boy's pants, and a subtle burnished pattern on the purple kimono. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
