The Seventh of the Line - Lord Ietsugu (Yusho-in)

Series; Annals of the Tokugawa Administration, 1875 - 1876

The Seventh of the Line - Lord Ietsugu (Yusho-in) - Interesting scene of members of the court entertaining the young Lord Ietsugu, the seventh Tokugawa shogun. He became shogun at the age of three after his father died, but sadly died at the age of six. Here, the boy pretends to ride a horse, sitting on a man's back and gripping striped reigns that run through the man's mouth. At left, a pair of men dance about, one flinging out his arm as he hops on one foot. The fellow behind him leaps around holding a black lacquer pail atop his head, grinning crazily. The beauties at right are amused by all the antics, laughing into their hands and pointing. Panels with simulated wood grain line the room, each decorated with flowers. The room opens on to a view of a river framed by a blossoming cherry tree. An amusing scene with expressive figures and vibrant color, detailed with burnishing in the black robes and the lacquer frames of the panels.
