Comments - Great illustration of the Taira commander Kagekiyo attempting to assassinate Minamoto no Yoritomo at the Great Buddha Hall of Todai-ji Temple in April 1190. After surviving the decisive defeat of the Taira by the Minamoto at the Battle of Dan-o-ura, Kagekiyo decided to kill Yoritomo, the leader of the Minamoto, in retribution. After learning that that Yoritomo would be visiting Todai-ji Temple in preparation for the reconstruction of the Great Buddha there, Kagekiyo developed his plan. Disguising himself in monk's robes, he has made his way into the great hall, and begins fighting in an attempt to reach Yoritomo, who sits on a platform at left, surrounded by noblemen. Having tossed one enemy to the ground at right, where he sprawls on his back, Kagekiyo stands atop the back of another fallen foe, gripping his naginata with both hands. He slashes at the samurai at left, who thrusts a pole at him. Kagekiyo looks back at Yoritomo with a defiant scowl, his hair flowing wilding around his face. Beneath his red monk's robe, he wears a fine suit of armor. At right, another samurai gestures at the Taira warrior with an evil grin. A terrific design with large, expressive figures and a handsomely detailed setting. A wonderful depiction of this legendary event.
