Old Customs: The Bustle of Spring, 1889

Comments - Interesting scene of beauties at a palace watching an entertainer holding a hand drum. He dances about, grinning wildly, to the amusement of the standing woman, who giggles into her kimono sleeve. One of the seated women leans back in fright, throwing her arm across her chest defensively. In the garden beyond, tatami mats are spread across the ground and a trainer directs a monkey dancing to the beat of a drum. A group of men and women are gathered on the porch above to watch. A beautiful pond fills the background, the far shore dotted with blossoming plum trees in early spring. Nicely detailed and colored.

Artist - Shogetsu (active circa 1880 - 1890)

Image Size - 18 1/2" x 14 1/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail. Some faint creasing and staining along edges, a few spots. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
