Eisho (active circa 1780 - 1800) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Classic Pillow Print

Classic Pillow Prints - During the Edo era, the pillow print or makura-e was a popular style of woodblock print. Often set against lovely, traditional backgrounds, these finely designed images usually depict a young couple in a private setting, playfully cuddling or resting before or after lovemaking. These prints were normally variations on that theme and reflect on the sometimes slightly erotic nature of Japanese woodblock prints. This beautiful group features prints by great Edo masters, including Utamaro, Kiyonaga, Harunobu, Toyokuni, and others. The figures are beautifully drawn and detailed, with attractive color. Reprints of these wonderful old designs are a great opportunity to collect these classic images at a fraction of the price of an original.

This presentation - We are pleased to offer this beautiful reprint as it was originally issued by the publisher, with a tissue paper overleaf featuring the series name and number of the image within the series, and the decorative outer folder, with an image of a famous Utamaro beauty portrait on the front (see example of folder below). Each print is mounted along one edge to a backing sheet. We rarely see reprints in their original folders, making these a great choice to collect.

Artist - Eisho (active circa 1780 - 1800)

Image Size - 6 3/4" x 9" + margins as shown; backing sheet 12 3/4" x 9 1/2"; outer folder 13 1/4" x 9 7/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Tissue paper overleafs have slight creasing. Outer folders have a few creases or wear at edges. A few outer folders have slight soiling. Please see photos for details. Very nice condition overall.
