Series; One-to-One Combats at the Great Battle of Kawanakajima

Hara Hayato and Akabozu Saihoin, 1857 - Terrific scene from the famous 16th century Battle of Kawanakajima of a dramatic fight between Hara Hayato and the warrior monk Akabozu Saihoin. His eyes bulging with rage, the bare-headed Hayato raises his sword high above his head while grasping his opponent's arm, his fringed personal standard fluttering above his head. Saihoin grabs Hayato's arm with one hand and his shoulder with the other, having lost his sword. His head is swathed in a red monk's cowl, and he wears a fine suit of armor. A sword lies on the rocky ground, alongside a trampled banner. Fighting continues behind them with a horseman galloping past at upper left, gripping his spear with both hands. Fantastic expression on Hayato's face, and excellent detail in the armor and weapons. A dynamic composition full of action, and a great choice for any collector interested in the samurai tradition. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
