Onoe Kikugoro III as Tenjiku Tokubei, 1832

Comments - Terrific portrait of Onoe Kikugoro III as the magician Tenjiku Tokubei in the play "Tenjiku Tokubei Karakoto Banashi," a drama that included fast costume changes and spectacular stage tricks. Practicing toad magic, Tokubei has cast a spell conjuring up an enormous toad behind him, staring to the side with a wide-eyed grimace, his brows furrowed. His hands are thrust out beside him, the fringed trim of his boldly patterned kimono swinging with his quick movement. His short hair sticks up atop his head, with longer locks over his shoulder and the rest pulled back into a low ponytail. A fantastic supernatural subject and a great dramatic image.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 9 3/4"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Stitching holes at right edge, a few small wormhole, small thinning spot at left edge, repaired. Slight soiling, a few creases, slight rubbing near edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
