Beauty with Battledore and Shuttlecock Kakemono

Comments - Wonderful Edo era kakemono or vertical diptych of a young beauty examining a feathered shuttlecock. A decorative battledore called a hagoita is tucked under her arm, both used for a game similar to badminton called hanetsuki, traditionally played at New Year's. She wears a shaded kimono featuring a design of large white chrysanthemums, tied with a gray geometric print obi. Her hair is pulled back into a large sleek bun, adorned with ribbons and hairpins, including one that features tiny origami cranes dangling from chains. A charming portrait with fine embossed detail on the battledore, the feathers of the shuttlecock, and the pale pink collar of the under robe.

Artist - Shunsen (1762 - circa 1830)

Image Size - 29 3/8" x 9 3/4"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Two attached panels. A few small holes, repaired. Faint toning, slight soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details.
