The Palace at Soma in the Earlier Pacification, 1868

Comments - Terrific scene featuring a ceremony at Soma Palace, the stronghold of the tenth-century rebel Taira no Masakado. After Masakado conquered most of the Kanto region and declared himself emperor, the court sent warriors to "pacify" his rebellion in 940. Here, a kneeling beauty holds out a long-handled sake server to pour drinks for the visitors, much to the anger of Masakado's retainers sitting in a row. The samurai at left leans forward biting his glove, while the man at right scowls with rage, wearing a formal black robe over a suit of armor and a tall court cap. Beyond the verandah railing, samurai are assembled for battle, their standards and banners fluttering in the wind, and smoke rises from a bonfire. An intriguing early Yoshitoshi subject, nicely detailed and colored.
