The War at Kagoshima, 1877

Comments - Fantastic triptych illustrating the Battle of Kagoshima, with a row of Imperial troops at right firing a volley of shots at the samurai rebels, bullets streaking across the sky. An explosion rocks the center of the battlefield, with flames and smoke billowing skyward and blood spurting from wounded samurai. A pile of bamboo poles flies into the air, along with a broken standard topped with the crest of the Shimazu Clan of Satsuma. Tree branches tied together with rope form a barrier running across the lower right, but the deterrent to troop movement is no match for modern weapons. The ground is scattered with dying warriors, abandoned weapons, and trampled standards. A dramatic and powerful depiction of war and a great design by Yoshitoshi.

Artist - Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 28 1/4" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Slight paper remnants on reverse of left and center panel at edges from previous mounting. Tiny loss at one corner, repaired. Slight soiling, slight rubbing near edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
