Comments - Intriguing image of the 14th-century Emperor Go-Daigo at his secluded palace in Kasagiyama. After the emperor's plans to overthrow the Kamakura Shogunate were discovered, he fled to Kasagiyama, hiding the Sacred Treasures there and raising an army to defend himself. Here, he has fallen asleep over a low red lacquer table and is dreaming. Two small ghosts appear in a wisp of smoke at left, childlike figures wearing white and pale pink robes over hakama pants. The spirits seem benign, smiling happily, perhaps a reminder of better times. Wonderful detail in the elegant furnishings, with delicate embossing in the white and pink robes and the drapery, burnishing in the black lacquer platform, and soft bokashi shading. A fascinating subject.
