Comments - Handsome illustration of the beautiful Tokiwa Gozen and her three sons escaping through the snow after her husband, Minamoto no Yoshitomo, was murdered by the Taira. She stands in the center, her infant son cradle to her chest beneath her kimono, holding the edge of her hat with one hand as she waits for her middle son to catch up. At left, her oldest son blows on his hand to warm it, pausing beneath a snow-covered pine tree. Snow falls heavily against the wintry blue-gray sky, and covers the tops of their feet, their legs wrapped in straw matting against the cold. A beautiful winter landscape setting with a pond at right and fields stretching across the plain towards the mountains in the distance, and farmhouses at far left. A lovely design with burnishing in the black lacquer hat and fine bokashi shading.
