Yorimitsu Sees a Monstrous Creature in the Mountains, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Fantastic image of Minamoto no Yorimitsu and his retainers spotting an enormous snake on Mt. Oku. His shitenno or four most loyal retainers, known as the Four Guardian Kings, are in the foreground, with Yorimitsu himself standing beyond, richly dressed and holding a fan. They watch the incredible scene of a black bear caught in the mouth of the giant serpent. Wounded and bleeding in several places, the bear uses his might to force open the jaws of the snake, blood dripping from the corner of its mouth. The enormous creature coils about the trunk of a pine tree, its body marked with bleeding cuts from the combat between the animals. The tree overlooks a dramatic view of a steep mountain valley, with clouds covering the base of the distant hills. A fantastic subject with intricate detail in the snake's scales and a wonderful natural setting.
