Oniwaka Observing the Great Carp in the Pool, No. 7 - A terrific Yoshitoshi design from the story of Oniwaka and the giant carp. In this old tale, Oniwaka, while studying at a temple, learned that a giant carp had eaten his mother when she fell into a pool at the foot of Bishamon Waterfall. He immediately left his studies and hunted down and fought the monster to avenge her death. He killed the giant fish and found his mother's remains in its belly. Here he stalks the giant carp from a rock outcropping, a blade concealed behind his back, preparing to strike. A dramatic and bold woodblock illustration of this classic tale.
