Nowaki, Chapter 28: Tamamo no mae, 1864

Comments - Fantastic portrait of the legendary Lady Tamamo no mae, a beautiful palace lady-in-waiting. After the 12th century Emperor Toba fell in love with her, he became increasingly ill. His astrologer discovered that she was actually an evil nine-tailed fox, who had been causing the emperor's sickness. The emperor's retainers hunted her down on the Plain of Nasu, where she turned into a rock that caused death when touched, becoming known as the "death stone." Here, arrows seem to bounce off her as she smiles beguilingly, looking over her shoulder amidst the tall grass of the plain. Dressed in elegant formal robes, an eerie glow emanates from her like a halo against the dark night sky. A terrific illustration of this famous tale, beautifully detailed.
