Memorial Portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro IX, 1903

Comments - Handsome memorial portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro IX in the role of Oboshi Yuranosuke from the famous kabuki play "Kanadehon Chushingura." He stands outside his master's palace, gripping with which Lord Hangan has just committed suicide. Ichikawa Danjuro IX was one of the most popular kabuki actors of the Meiji era, known for his outstanding performances in roles such as Yuranosuke. A poignant image, with pink lotus blossoms petals drifting over the sky and the castle in the background seen in soft silhouette. A fine example of shine-e or death portraits.
