The Bravery of Kondo Isami at Katsunuma in Rai Province, 1874

Comments - Dramatic image of the samurai Kondo Isami during the Battle of Koshu-Katsunuma during the Boshin War. Isami led forces loyal to the shogunate against pro-Imperialists, but they were badly defeated and Isami barely escaped. He stands defiantly in the center, shouting and gripping his sword upright. The plaza around him is littered with dying samurai, blood flowing from their wounds. At left, warriors firing guns wear the distinctive shaguma or "Red Bear" wig, identifying them as soldiers from the Tosa Clan fighting for the emperor. A striking composition, with the two sturdy trees on either side of Isami repeating his upright form and conveying a sense that his strength is as great as their trunks. A moody, atmospheric design.

Artist - Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892)
