Mirror of National Costumes of All Nations, 1882 - Intriguing triptych by Kiyochika illustrating couples from different countries in their national dress. In the center, the Meiji Emperor stands behind the empress who sits in a chair holding a fan and wearing a crown. From left, the countries represented include America, Russia, Africa, Arabia, China, Japan, Britain, India, Korea, and France. At bottom right, a French man in military uniform sits on a chair, his wife dressed in a long purple dress with a full skirt at red ruffles at the collar, sleeves, and hem. In the left panel, the Russian man has a thick beard and wears a double-breasted green coat trimmed with fur and a fur hat. His wife warms her hand in a fur muff. A fascinating image with lively color, nicely detailed.
