A Rest-day in Yokohama, 1861

Comments - Terrific view of an Englishman and his family enjoying a Sunday stroll along the waterfront at Yokohama. The man rests his hands atop his cane, dressed in a long blue jacket and a black top hat. The woman wears a dress with a plaid hoopskirt, a cape draped around her shoulders and her head covered with a cloth headdress. The children entertain themselves playing music, the girl blowing a horn as she tilts her head back and the boy playing an accordion. A lighthouse on a wooden frame with a tile roof stands at left. On the bay, a small boat ferries passengers and crew from the large black ship in the harbor, both vessels flying British flags. A fascinating portrayal of foreigners in Japan.
