Samurai Fending off an Attacker, 1855

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene of two samurai inside a house fending off an attacker. With a strong push, the seated man in the black coat pushes the enemy through a round window, sending him tumbling backwards among broken pieces of shoji panels. The samurai at right draws his sword, but his companion restrains him with a hand. Oddly, in the pond at lower left, a man has emerged from the water, clinging to the leg of a stone lantern, his head covered with seaweed and a fish wriggling out of his nose. A fascinating subject with wonderful action and detail.
