August: Oiran, 1890 - Charming illustration from a series depicting events during each month of the year. For August, Gekko depicts an oiran, a high ranking courtesan, seated on a bench outside the entrance to the Yoshiwara district, which is silhouetted in brushy strokes against the evening sky. She wears an elegant white kimono tied with a black obi, her hair piled high atop her head with many hairpins and combs. Wearing matching attire, her young attendant plays happily with two puppies in the street. A lovely design with fine detail, including a delicate embossed pattern on the cloth covering the bench and on the lining of the white kimono.
