Monk and Servant, 1892

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene depicting Onoe Kikugoro V as a monk or priest and Ichikawa Danjuro IX as the young servant Tarokaja. The monk looks over his shoulder, his lips tightly pressed together, clutching a string of prayer beads and a bamboo pole in his hands. He wears a gray robe shadowed with black and a blue gray cloth headdress. At right, the young man holds a fan in his outstretched hand, a worried expression on his face. A folded black robe is draped over one shoulder, and his thinning hair is pulled back into a slender ponytail sticking straight out behind his head. A flowing line separates the figures, with a pine tree in silhouette against a yellow background at right, and a bamboo forest and autumn grasses against a gray ground at left. Nice large figures, carefully detailed, with burnishing in the black robe at right and embossing in the white kimono trim and folding fan.
