Comments - Attractive scene from the "Tale of Genji" of Prince Genji and a group of beauties gathered in an upstairs room as rain falls steadily outside. The young nobleman leans against the verandah railing at left as he looks up, watching a cuckoo swoop through the night sky. In the center, a young girl plays the koto, leaning over the instrument as the beauty at left follows along in the songbook open on her lap. She wears a blue kimono patterned with cherry blossoms and flowing water, her hair adorned with ribbons and decorative ornaments. The standing beauty holds a bowl of food with chopsticks laid across it, while at left another woman climbs the stairs. A charming design with wonderful color and detail, and fine bokashi shading in the sky and silhouettes of the trees and garden beyond.
