Vengeance at Iga Pass, circa 1849 - 1852 - Fantastic illustration of the story commonly known as "Vengeance at Iga Pass" or the "Igagoe Revenge," a true tale that resulted in many popular kabuki plays. The hero, Wada Shizuma, enlists the help of the swordsman Karaki Masaemon to avenge his father's death, waiting to attack the murderer Sawai Matagoro as he travels through Iga Pass. In the center, Masaemon rushes forward with his sword in hand to meet Matagoro, who rides on a black horse at left. At right, Shizuma and his two companions prepare to fight, leaning forward anxiously, the young samurai with his sword already drawn. In the center, the groom flings up his arms, yelling in alarm ad the retainers behind him react with surprise or anger. The road leads up a dark hill lined with pine trees at right, and fields stretch out into the distance with a castle perched atop a mountain at right. A few raindrops slant across the darkening sky. A lively scene with great color and expressive figures, and a handsome natural setting.
