Rescuing a Courtesan, 1893

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of a young man coming to the rescue of a courtesan outside a teahouse. She hangs from a tie-dyed red sash fastened to a pine tree as she makes her escape over the courtyard fence, knocking loose clumps of snow. She smiles slightly at the man, the edge of her white scarf caught between her teeth. He tilts his head as he ties a cloth around his head, while the girl at right watches with concern, he hands spread out in alarm. Several black crows fly through the gray winter sky, usually an omen of bad luck. A fascinating subject, nicely colored with a handsome setting.
