Series; Architectures

The Diet Building, 1941 - Great view of the Diet Building in Tokyo, the home of both houses of Japan's National Diet. The modern structure was completed in 1936, made entirely from Japanese materials with the exception of the door locks, stained glass, and pneumatic tubes. The central tower is topped with a stepped pyramid, flanked by two wings with a colonnaded drive and steps at the main entrance. Gihachiro shows the building at a slight angle, seen from the gate at the side rather than head on. The scene is cleverly composed so that the gray distant mountains echo the pyramid of the tower, adding to the sense of strength and monumentality. A terrific print from this rarely seen WWII architecture series.
