Princess Sayohime Waving Goodbye, 1887

Series; Mirror of Famous Women from Ancient to Modern Times

Princess Sayohime Waving Goodbye, 1887 - Terrific image of Princess Sayohime watching as her husband, the warrior Otomo no Sadehiko, leaves by ship to invade Korea. According to legend, the faithful Sayohime climbed to the top of a mountain to watch the fleet depart, watching and praying for her husband's safe return. She cried and prayed so intensely, and stayed so long, that she turned to stone. Here, she clambers atop a rugged rock, frantically waving a cloth, the wind whipping her hair and robes about her as she watches the fleet depart. The setting sun fills the sky with rays of orange light behind banks of clouds shadowed in blue, reflected in an array of colors on the shimmering surface of the water below. Includes delicate cloth embossing in the white under robe. A fine composition with an intriguing, expressive figure.
