Series; The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido by Two Brushes

Shono: The Kumano Shrine and the Shiratori Grave Mound, 1855 - Attractive scene from the collaborative series "The Tokaido by Two Brushes" featuring figures by Toyokuni III and landscapes by Hiroshige. Two travelers are shown in the foreground, a young girl and a woman who is gesturing with the pipe in her hand. The girl looks up at her with a slight smile, resting her hands atop a walking staff. Each has a large woven hat. The inset above shows a classic Hiroshige winter scene with snow falling gently over the Kumano Shrine and the Shiratori grave mound. A couple men make their way along the path between fields that leads through a torii gate to the building nestled beneath tall pine trees. A handsome design with fine bokashi shading.
