by Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) and Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)
Eawase (The Painting Contest) and View of Sagano, 1853 - Terrific image from a series of collaborative triptychs by Hiroshige and Toyokuni III illustrating scenes from the classic novel "The Tale of Genji." Here, a beauty and a young girl enjoy the view from the verandah of a mansion. The girl holds a long telescope in her hand, smiling up at her companion. The beauty wears an elegant kimono shaded from gray to soft green and patterned with chrysanthemums and writing, her hair adorned with a comb, hairpins, floral ornaments, and ribbons. The landscape of Sagano spreads out below, with blossoming cherry trees and pines growing along the river's edge and mountains beyond misty clouds in the distance. The spire of a pagoda rises above the rooftops at lower right, with a bridge leading across to the opposite shore. An attractive design with wonderfully detailed figures by Toyokuni III and a handsome Hiroshige landscape. Includes fine bokashi shading in the background and embossing in the white kimono trim.
