by Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) and Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)
Series; The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido by Two Brushes
Hamamatsu: Passenger and Baggage on a Horse, 1854 - Handsome design from the "The Tokaido by Two Brushes," featuring figures by Toyokuni III and landscapes by Hiroshige. In the foreground, a beauty rides on a horse laden with two large wicker trunks on its back. Wrapped in a blue coat with a white and gray crosshatch pattern, the woman looks down at the porter walking alongside the animal. She wears tabi socks and zori sandals, and has a woven hat tied beneath her chin with a red cord. The lovely scene above shows a pine tree framing a view of the sea, with waves lapping at the sandy shore. Additional pines a narrow peninsula extending into the water at right, with more trees in silhouette along the horizon. A terrific composition with the figure jutting up into the landscape inset, adding a sense of depth.
